A rhinoplasty is a nose reshaping procedure performed for those whose nose is out of proportion with other facial features or otherwise does not compliment the face. In most cases, the shape of the nose is determined by genetics, but in some instances it is due to trauma.
This procedure can make the nose smaller, reduce a hump, make changes in the bridge or tip of the nose, or change the angle of the nose, and often can improve breathing problems caused by structural defects in the nose. The goal of aesthetic rhinoplasty is to provide an improved shape and a natural contour, thereby improving self-esteem.
The surgical approach may be "open" or "closed," depending on individual needs. An open rhinoplasty uses a small and inconspicuous incision under the nose between the nostrils. This allows precise correction of the underlying structures. A closed rhinoplasty uses incisions hidden inside the nostrils and is preferred for relatively minor internal changes, such as reducing a hump.
After a consultation, your surgeon will help you determine if you are a good candidate and if you have realistic expectations for your surgery outcome. You should be of an age that your facial growth is complete and should be healthy, with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind.
The Procedure
The procedure takes two to three hours depending on the extent of the surgery and is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.
